When the Nuremberg Lehrergesangverein gives a performance of Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana' on the 2nd and 3rd September together with young choristers of Kıbrıs Sanat in Girne, the Aegean Philharmonic Orchestra Izmir and many other participants, it is a contribution to the very special tradition, which has enriched the cultural life in Northern Cyprus for years.
It is the tradition of an intercultural, Bavarian-Turkish Cypriot encounter for the sake of classical music.
It is not accidental that music is the medium of encounter between Bavarians and Turkish Cypriots. Music is the only language in the world which is understood by all the people of the world without any exception. No frontier and prohibition can make it hush. Less than ever, when Carl Orff is the powerfully eloquent and musical speaker.His “Carmina Burana“ is one of the most important works that the history of European music in the 20th century has bred. In a singular flush of creative composition Orff transformed the Medieval “Songs from the Benediktbeuern Monastery“, which he had come across, into a piece of music that has enjoyed utmost popularity by now.The musical share of the Bavarian-Turkish Cypriot joint venture is not the only pleasant aspect. The revenue of the project will inure to the benefit of a social purpose and along with the organization contacts, even friendships between Bavarians and Turkish Cypriots, will arise. The Bavarian musicians will have the opportunity to realize how pleasant and amiable people are in that wonderful country that is mostly only noticed in the news for its status as a divided country.
Guests in both concerts can be curious about something extraordinary: the fascinating music of one of the 20th century's greatest composers, performed by an intercultural giant orchestra and – hopefully – under the starlit sky of the Mediterranean Sea which was the prolific soil for the profound roots of our common European culture.
